Sibenik: Croatia’s Most Valuable Jewel

The medieval city of Sibenik has a rich history that dates back to the eleventh century is a highly regarded town in Croatia because of its excellent weather, great coastline, unspoiled nature, medieval palaces, numerous rocky and pebble beaches, beautiful landscapes, breathtaking sights, fabulous cuisine to name just a few. Besides, it’s famous for its Greek and Venetian origins. Without a doubt, the city claimed back its position among the most popular tourist destinations in Europe after surviving war more than a decade ago because each year the number of tourists visiting has increased significantly and most of them want to stay forever. Yes, you heard me right! This post sheds more light on why Sibenik is highly regarded and what people can experience there that is not found elsewhere.

1. Antique Architectural Masterpieces

– Cathedral of St. James/St. Jakov

The Cathedral of St. James is Sibenik’s icon and is found at the center of the city. Its construction began in 1431 and was completed in 1535 incorporating both Renaissance and Gothic elements. The Cathedral is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is frequented by tourists, especially those who watch the Game of Thrones.


– Church of Krsevan

This is one of the prettiest Romanesque churches in Croatia. It recorded back to the twelfth century and served as a church until it was critically damaged during the second world war. Since its restoration, this architectural masterpiece was converted into a gallery area and is referred to as the Gallery of St. Krsevan.


– Fortresses

Sibenik has four forts that were built at different times by the military to survive invasion and conquest during its turbulent past centuries ago. They include St. Michael’s fortress that dates back to the eleventh century, St. John’s fortress that is featured in one of the most popular shows Game of Thrones, Subicevac or Barone fortress that dates back to 1647 and St. Nicholas fortress that was constructed in the mid-sixteenth century. Visit and feel the elegance of these unique fortifications.

2. Great Weather

Sibenik experiences Mediterranean climate meaning the Summers are long, warm or hot, while the winters are mild and wet. If you are tired of freezing winters experienced in other parts of Europe and other parts of the world, the weather in Sibenik will make you want to stay for good.

3. Pristine Beaches

If you love the beach like me, Sibenik has some of the best beaches in Europe. Banj beach, for instance, is located near the city center and offers an excellent view of the city. Apart from Banj beach, visitors can enjoy the Jarida city beach, sandy beach Solaris to mention a few. These beaches offer a mixture of water sports that you can enjoy with your loved ones.


4. Great Food and Wine

Mediterranean food tops the menu in Sibenik and is delicious with olive oil, vegetables, goat, fish, grapes, almonds and much more. The food is famous for the way its prepared and considered extremely healthy by nutritionists. Quality Croatian wine is served together with most of the foods and so it’s hard to avoid it. Sibenik offers the best of Adriatic cuisine.

5. Cheap Real Estate

Sibenik land is cheaper compared to real estate in other cities like Dubrovnik and Split. Visitors who fall in love with the city and plan to make it their vacation destination of choice are taking advantage of the cheap real estate in Sibenik that is accessible on the periphery of the town. If you want a quiet and tranquil environment, you can find houses in the countryside. Lastly, if you are looking for the property with the highest potential then get closer to the sea.
